Srinivas Acharyya and the stolen books

18+ minute informal discourse given in late December 2001 by
Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj
at our Temple in Dum Dum Park, Calcutta.

AND: uploaded the next day: Part Two of this lecture.

Subject:

  • At a very young age Srinivas Acharyya met with Vishnupriya Devi but Mahaprabhu had already disappeared at that time.
  • Srinivas received a dream to go to Gadadhar Pandit to learn Srimad-Bhagavatam. Gadadhar had a similar dream, and agreed to teach him.
  • He sent Srinivas to get another copy of the book from Bengal, but Gadadhar Pandit passed away before he returned.
  • By the grace of Gadadhar Pandit's intention, saying he will teach him, Srinivas Acharyya became a great Bhagavat teacher.
  • After their studies were finished Jiva Goswami gave the titles: Narottam 'Thakur', Srinivas 'Acharrya', and Shyamananda 'Prabhu'.
  • Jiva Goswami sent the books of the Goswamis with them to Bengal, but on the way King Birahambir stole the books, having been advised by his astrologer that these trunks contained jewels.
  • They searched extensively, and finally Srinivas Acharyya stayed behind to find the books. He came to hear Bhagavat reading at the King's house, and in that assembly Srinivas explained the proper meaning of Srimad-Bhagavatam.
  • The King was impressed, and asked his circumstances. Hearing this, King Birahambir took Srinivas Acharya and showed him the books. He confessed to having stolen them and took shelter at Srinivas Acharyya's lotus feet and begged for initiation.
  • Srinivas Acharyya sent news of the books to Narottam Thakur and others in Bengal. All were pleased.
  • Narottam Thakur, Srinivas Acharrya, and Shyamananda Prabhu then preached extensively in north-eastern India.
